1st anniversary of my music blog – thanks to you all!

English: I celebrated the 1-year anniversary of my WordPress blog on the 29th of March. So I just wanted to take a minute to say “thank you” to all my friends, followers and visitors in more than 34th countries for coming to my small virtual home.

I try to keep it updated at least every second week and so you can find 37 posts filled with some of my music experiences now.

I really like my solo music activities as a singer/songwriter, but it’s definitely more fun with other musicians. It’s a creativity booster. So I wrote new songs and lyrics for my new band „SONIC LiQUID“ and we’ll have our very first live music performance on the 11th of April near Cologne, Germany (see Facebook).

Again – thank you for being part of that and I hope you will keep on supporting me by reading my posts and sending comments and feedback.

Deutsch: Am 29. März ist mein WordPress Blog gerade 1 Jahr alt geworden. Ich möchte nun diese Gelegenheit nutzen all meinen Freunden, „Followern“ und Besuchern aus den mehr als 34 Ländern dieser Erde dafür zu danken, dass sie meine kleine virtuelle Heimat besucht haben.

Ich versuche sie mindestens jede zweite Woche auf den neusten Stand zu bringen und so kann man mittlerweile 37 Posts über ein paar meiner Musikerfahrungen lesen.

So sehr ich meine Soloaktivitäten als Singer/Songwriter auch mag, den meisten Spaß habe ich zusammen mit anderen Musikern. Dadurch steigert sich die Kreativitat immens und so konnte ich wieder einige neue Songs und Texte für meine neue Band „SONIC LiQUID“ schreiben mit der ich am 11.4. zum ersten Mal in der Nähe von Köln gemeinsam auftreten werde (siehe Facebook).

Nochmal – vielen Dank dafür, dass ihr ein Teil davon seid und ich hoffe, dass ihr weiterhin meinen Blog lest und Feedback oder Kommentare schreibt.

English: My second song I sang at the show “Kunst gegen Bares” in the ARTheater of Cologne is named „Just Be!“. It’s about doing whatever you’ve always wanted to do and never get discouraged. Be sure of want you really want, make a plan, rigorously follow it and then you’ve got a chance to reach your personal goals.

I decided to make more music and to present my songs to a larger audience. I also wanted to get in contact with other musicians or artists, to create something new. Until now I’ve had an awesome year. I’ve lived my music on stage in a different and better way than before and I’ve found new friends. So – I encourage others to do it in the same way – “Just be!”.

I recently wrote this song “Just Be!” for my new band SONIC LiQUID and presented it in February in the ARTheatre for the first time.

 

Deutsch: Mein zweiter Song „Just Be!“, den ich bei „Kunst gegen Bares“ im Kölner ARTheater gesungen habe handelt davon, daß man das tun sollte, was man von Herzen will. Man sollte einfach man selbst sein und sich nicht verbiegen lassen. Um seine Ziele zu erreichen muss man natürlich einen Plan machen und diesen dann konsequent abarbeiten.

Bisher hatte ich ein tolles Jahr. Ich habe musikalisch viel erlebt und habe neue Freunde kennengelernt. Ich kann also andere nur ermutigen genauso vorzugehen – „Just be!“.

Ich selbst habe mich dazu entschieden, wieder mehr Musik zu machen und meine eigenen Songs einem größerem Publikum vorzustellen. Außerdem wollte ich andere Musiker und Künstler kennenlernen, um dann eine neue Band zu gründen. Den Song „Just Be!“ hab ich für meine neue Band SONIC LiQUID geschrieben und im ARTheater zum ersten Mal gespielt.

English: My first Song at the open stage „Kunst gegen Bares“ in the ARTheater in Cologne on the 23rd February 2015 is named “Ohne Titel” (“Without Title”). This song is very personnel and I could not find a title, which fits to its content. I am rather a very extroverted person and as long I am complaining about things I don’t like and as long as I am fighting, everything is ok with me. I am preparing myself for being stopped, blocked and tranquilized. If this will happen one day I will feel definitely minimized. This is what the song is about.

I know that especially my German songs are not really commercial and that these are usually not touching the audience in the first moment. Though this is critical in a live concert where no one knows my songs, I decided to sing it anyway.

I really feel honored that the audience elected me as the third best artist of this show. This was awesome and a great evening! Many thanks to the super audience!

Deutsch: Mein erster Song bei der offenen Bühne „Kunst gegen Bares“ im Kölner ARTheater am 23.2.2015 heißt „Ohne Titel“. Dieser Song ist sehr persönlich und es ist mir kein passender Titel eingefallen, der gut zum Inhalt passt. Ich bin ein eher extrovertierter Mensch und solange ich mich noch über Dinge beschwere und kämpfe, ist alles noch in Ordnung mit mir. Wenn mir aber jemals die Worte fehlen sollten, dann hat man mich endgültig klein gekriegt. Darum geht es in diesem Song.

Ich weiß, dass meine deutschen Songs wenig kommerziell sind und nicht beim ersten Mal sofort den Zuhörer erreichen. Obwohl das bei einem Live Konzert auch einmal nicht funktionieren kann, da ja noch niemand diesen Song kennt, habe ich dennoch diesen Song gewählt.

Toll ist, dass das Publikum meine Performance mit dem dritten Platz geehrt hat. Der Abend war insgesamt klasse! Vielen Dank an das Publikum!

The new Rockband SONIC LiQUID is born & my 1st anniversary @ „Kunst gegen Bares“

English: One year ago I started looking for people who like making music with me. As already written in my first blogs, I am making music for as long as I can remember. Last I was one of the singers and the guitar player of the Backporch Stringband, a Bluegrass Band in the south of Germany (Sindelfingen). Due to several relocations, I could not perform so often with this band in the last years, but it was always great fun performing and being on stage with the boys.

After cancelling our few performances in the last year I decided reviving myself as singer/songwriter.

My first performance on the open stage “Kunst gegen Bares” in Cologne in February 2014 was very successful for me. Out of 10 different performances, the audience elected me as so-called “Kapitalistenschwein” and I won this show. Though I just wanted to connect to other musicians and artists, this was unexpected but absolutely great and motivating. Unfortunately I could not seriously connect with others, so I finally used the electronic bulletin board on the homepage of the music shop “Musicstore” in Cologne and I applied to a notification of 2 Rockbands looking for a singer respectively. I was successful right after my first audition in Cologne and the boys are really ok (2x electrical guitars (Ralph and Armin), 1 electrical bass (Thomas), drums (Jens)). We are not covering already known songs, but want to make our own music. So we have to regularly rehearse and I am responsible for writing melodies and lyrics. We are creative and I really feel great. Music and mood fit.

In the meantime my new band has got a name: SONIC LiQUID. This was a spontaneous idea and we are all happy with the name. We are planning our first performance in April. So I am very excited and look forward to this event. Further details will be announced in my blog and in Facebook.

My upcoming next performance as singer/songwriter at “Kunst gegen Bares” in the Cologne ARTheater will be on the 23rd of February 2015 (Start: 20:00, admittance: 19:00). You should be there right in time, because this show is usually quickly sold out.

This will be my 1st anniversary at the open stage :-). I think that I will perform in German. I’ll definitely sing songs I have never performed on this stage, so let’s see, what will happen next Monday.

The pictures are showing some impressions from our rehearsal room. It’s very small and we are looking for a new one!

Deutsch: Ein Jahr ist es her, dass ich mich auf die Suche nach Leuten gemacht habe, die Lust haben mit mir Musik zu machen. Wie schon in meinen ersten Blogs geschrieben, mache ich schon Musik seit ich denken kann. Zuletzt war ich jahrelang Gitarrist und einer der beiden Sänger der Backporch Stringband, einer Bluegrass Band aus Süddeutschland (Sindelfingen). Aufgrund meines Umzugs nach Köln, konnte ich nur noch selten mit dieser Band auftreten. Trotzdem hat es mir immer Spaß gemacht mit den Jungs Musik zu machen. Nach der Absage der gemeinsamen Auftritte im letzten Jahr habe ich mich entschlossen wieder allein als Singer/Songwriter aufzutreten.

Im Februar 2014 hatte ich dann sehr erfolgreich meinen ersten Auftritt bei der offenen Bühne „Kunst gegen Bares“ in Köln. Von den 10 Performances dieses Abends wurde ich vom Publikum am Ende der Show zum „Kapitalistenschwein“ gekürt. Das war natürlich toll, obwohl ich eigentlich dort angetreten war, andere Musiker kennenzulernen. Leider hat das auf diesem Wege dann doch nicht geklappt, sondern ich habe mich dann letztendlich über das elektronische schwarze Brett im Internet beim Musicstore in Köln bei 2 Rockbands beworben. Gleich bei der ersten Band war mein Vorsingen erfolgreich und auch die Jungs sind echt in Ordnung (2x E-Gitarre (Ralph und Armin), E-Bass (Thomas), Schlagzeug (Jens)). Wir wollen eigene Musikstücke und keine Cover machen, daher sind jetzt Proben und für mich Text- und Melodieschreiben angesagt. Wir sind recht kreativ und ich fühle mich wohl! Musik und Stimmung passen! Mittlerweile haben wir auch einen Namen: SONIC LiQUID. Die Idee kam spontan und alle sind damit zufrieden. Im April werden wir unseren ersten Auftritt haben. Da bin ich ja mal gespannt. Alles Weitere gibt es in diesem Blog und auf Facebook.

Mein nächster Auftritt bei „Kunst gegen Bares“ im Kölner ARTheater wird am nächsten Montag 23.2.2015 sein (20:00, Einlass: 19:00). Man sollte wieder rechtzeitig da sein, da die Show vermutlich wieder schnell ausverkauft sein wird. Das wäre dann mein einjähriges Jubiläum bei KGB :-). Ich denke, dass ich wieder Songs in Deutsch singen werde. Auf alle Fälle werden es wieder neue Songs sein, die ich dort noch nicht gesungen habe. Mal sehen, was passiert.

Die Fotos zeigen ein paar Eindrücke aus unserem Proberaum. Er ist sehr klein und wir schauen uns nach etwas Neuem um.

English: The show „Kunst gegen Bares“ („Art for Cash“) is an open stage and the audience decides at the end of each show which performance suits them best. The votes for the acts are given by throwing money into the piggy banks of the artists respectively. The one who gets the most money is winning the show and is nominated as so-called “Kapitalistenschwein” of the evening. Sarah was second best after the comedian Simon Stäblein. She was very happy and I was super proud! She really deserved it!

In the Youtube video you’ll find her first song “Stay in my heart” which she wrote approx. 4 years ago.

Deutsch: Die Show „Kunst gegen Bares“ ist eine offene Bühne bei der am Ende das Publikum entscheidet welcher Künstler/-in am besten gefallen hat. Man wirft dazu so viel Geld in das jeweilige Sparschwein, wie einem der Auftritt wert war. Am Schluß wird das Geld gezählt und derjenige der das meiste Geld bekommt wird zum „Kapitalistenschwein“ gekürt. Sarah hat nach dem Comedian Simon Stäblein den zweiten Platz gemacht. Sie war sehr glücklich und ich war sehr stolz. Sie hat’s wirklich verdient!

English: My daughter Sarah will play this time 2 of her new songs live at the open stage “Kunst gegen Bares” in the ARTheater in Cologne on the 12th of January 2015. Start will be at 20:00; admittance at 19:00.

I am very proud that she likes writing songs and performing these live on stage in front of a larger audience. I really respect her courage!

My last blog in 2014: Stand-up Music Comedy with Hildegart Scholten – Ad lib version of my German song „Winter“

English: Immediately after I had performed my last German song “Winter”, Hildegart Scholten, one of the 2 moderators of the open stage “Kunst gegen Bares” in Köln, asked me to stay on stage and to spontaneously support her. I was honored to do that. After Gerd Buurmans’ introduction, he told me to repeat my Christmas song “Winter”, because she thought this needs to get some new verses between the original lyrics. I sang my song very softly and she added something ad lib to it – as usual. I have done this with Hildegard Scholten or the fourth time during this year without being informed and without having any rehearsal before the show. Again this was really fun for the audience and for me. Just watch the YouTube video.

Thank you Mrs. Scholten! You are incredible! I hope to see you again next year!

Deutsch: Unmittelbar nach meinem letzten Song „Winter“ bat mich Hildegart Scholten, Comedian und eine der zwei Moderatoren von Kunst gegen Bares in Köln, auf der Bühne zu bleiben und sie zu begleiten. Natürlich habe ich das gemacht. Nach der Einleitung durch Gerd Buurmann, sagte sie zu mir, dass mein Weihnachtslied „Winter“ Zeilen bräuchte, die zwischen den eigentlichen Liedzeilen lägen. So sollte ich leise mein Lied singen und sie würde dann spontan etwas dazu improvisieren. Ich habe dies nun schon zum vierten Mal in diesem Jahr mit Hildegart Scholten gemacht, ohne vor der Show informiert zu sein und geübt zu haben. Dem Publikum und auch mir hat es mal wieder viel Spaß gemacht. Seht selbst in dem Youtube Video.

Robert Artley – My 2nd song in German „Winter“

English: Today is the 21st of December and that’s why a song about the wintertime fits perfectly. I know exactly where I was and when I wrote this song. I was sitting on my bed in my room in my parents’ house. It was very cold outside and very comfortable with a cup of tea. I am aware that my songs are melancholic, but I think this feeling fits very well to this dark, cold but also contemplative time of the year. It’s obvious, that I couldn’t sing this song at any other time on the open stage “Kunst gegen Bares” in Cologne. This was a premiere for the audience and for me, because I have never performed these 2 songs, “Ich will ausruh’n” and “Winter”, for a greater audience. That’s why it was exciting but also fun!

Deutsch: Heute ist der 21. Dezember und daher passt dieses Lied über den Winter auch prima. Ich kann mich noch sehr genau daran erinnern, wo und wann ich dieses Lied geschrieben habe. Es saß auf dem Bett in meinem Zimmer im Haus meiner Eltern. Es war kalt draußen und ich hatte es mir bei einer Tasse Tee gemütlich gemacht. Ich weiß, dass alle meine Lieder melancholisch sind, aber ich finde Melancholie passt sehr gut in diese dunkle, kalte und besinnliche Jahreszeit. Es ist klar, dass ich dieses Lied zu keiner anderen Jahreszeit bei „Kunst gegen Bares“ spielen konnte. Für das Publikum, wie auch für mich war dies eine Premiere, da ich beide Lieder „Ich will ausruh’n“ und „Winter“ noch nie vor einem größeren Publikum gespielt habe. Daher war es spannend und hat gleichzeitig Spaß gemacht!

English: My 1st song in German at “Kunst gegen Bares” in the ARTheater in Cologne (15th December 2014) is called “Ich will ausruh’n” (in English: “I want to (take a) rest”). Sometime you just want to sit there and to think about nothing or you don’t want to do anything at all. I can’t recall what I felt when I wrote this song, but I think it must have been something similar. No matter what others are talking about you, I think that it is absolutely normal to take a rest and to relax from time to time to be recharged.

Deutsch: Mein erstes Lied in Deutsch bei Kunst gegen Bares im Kölner ARTheater am 15.12. 2014 war „Ich will ausruh’n“. Manchmal will man einfach nur so dasitzen und nichts denken oder tun. Ich kann mich nicht mehr so genau erinnern, aber genau das muss ich mir wohl dabei gedacht haben, als ich dieses Lied geschrieben habe. Dabei muss es auch egal sein, was andere über einen sagen, denn meiner Meinung nach ist es völlig normal, sich von Zeit zu Zeit hängen zu lassen und auszuruhen um neue Kraft zu tanken.
