“Fête de la Musique” in Cologne 2014, June 21st

The annual music festival “Fête de la Musique”, also known as the worldwide celebration of music, is taking place on June 21st in cities around the world. Jake Lang, the French Minister of Culture created this festival. The first official 1st “Fête de la Musique” occurred in Paris in June 1982. Since then it is celebrated in more than 460 cities in 110 countries on the same day.

Its purpose is to promote music in two ways:

  • Amateur and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets. The slogan Faites de la musique (Make music), a homophone of Fête de la Musique, is used to promote this goal.
  • Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public.

The “Fête de la Musique” started in Cologne last year and I got the chance to perform my music on one of the acoustic stages this year (Akkustik Spielort 3, 21.6.2014, 17:30 – 18:00 – I don’t know where I’ll exactly find it . I was told it, it’s here: Silo 23, Aggrippinawerft).

It’s exciting to be a part of such a global annual event. So – let’s see what I will experience there. I’ll let you know in this blog.

“Kunst gegen Bares” for the 3rd time

English: Gerd Buurmann created the open stage “Kunst gegen Bares” (roughly translated as “Art for Cash”) and he is moderating the show in Cologne since January 2007. You will find it in approx. 15 German cities according to “Wikipedia”. Comedians, poets, actors, musicians, etc. may perform for 8-10 minutes on this open stage. After all performances are finished, the audience donate money in the piggy bank of the artist they liked most, respectively. The artist who collected most of the money is nominated as so-called “Kapitalistenschwein “ of the evening. 🙂 This happened to me, when I sang my songs on my first performance in Cologne, which was very unexpected. My intention was not to get a price or to earn money, but to connect to people with the same interests. May-be one day I will find someone to work with me on my songs. So I planned my 3rd live performance in the ARTheater on the 23rd of June 2014. Start will be at 20:00; admittance at 19:00. Let’s see what will happen. You’ll read it in this blog.

The picture from me was taken in my parents’ restaurant in the early 70s, where I used to sing from time to time. I liked it! 🙂

Deutsch: Gerd Buurmann hat die offene Bühne „Kunst gegen Bares“ erfunden und er moderiert diese Show in Köln seit Januar 2007. Momentan findet man lt. Wikipedia diese Show in ca. 15 Städten in Deutschland. Auf dieser offenen Bühne treten Comedians, Dichter, Schauspieler, Musiker etc. für ca. 8-10 Minuten auf. Nachdem alle Künstler aufgetreten sind, spendet das Publikum Geld in das Sparschwein desjenigen Künstlers, der ihnen jeweils am besten gefallen hat. De Künstler mit dem meisten Geld bekommen hat, wird zum „Kapitalistenschwein“ des Abends gekürt. :-). Ich hatte in keiner Weise damit gerechnet, dass mir so etwas ausgerechnet nach meinem allerersten Auftritt in Köln passieren könnte. Ich war nicht angetreten Kapitalistenschwein zu werden oder überhaupt Geld zu bekommen, sondern um Leute mit ähnlichen Interessen zu treffen. Vielleicht treffe ich eines Tages jemanden, der Lust hat zusammen mit mir an meinen Songs zu arbeiten. Meinen dritten Live Auftritt im ARTheater habe ich am 23. Juni 2014. (Start: 20:00, Eintritt ab 19:00). Mal sehen, was passieren wird. Ihr werdet es in diesem Blog lesen können.

Das Bild von mir wurde in den frühen 70er Jahren in der Gaststätte meiner Eltern aufgenommen. Dort habe ich immer mal wieder gesungen. Ich sehe nicht gerade glücklich aus, aber ich habe es sehr gemocht! 🙂

Feel the difference: Same song – different sound!

English: I published my song „My time will come“ in this blog a few days ago. Let’s compare the solo version with the band version, which I have recorded during a live jam session with my friends from the Backporch Stringband.

The very first time I played it with them, it was hard to stay focused on the lyrics I was singing and the music I was playing, because I wanted to listen to what my friends are doing with their instruments. I love those moments very much!

Deutsch: Ich habe meine Song „My time will come“ in diesem Blog vor ein paar Tagen veröffentlicht. Hier zum Vergleich derselbe Song aus einer Live-Aufnahme während einer Jam-Session mit meinen Freunden der Backporch Stringband.

Das allererste Mal, als ich mit Ihnen meine Songs gespielt habe, war es schwer für mich auf den Text und die Musik zu konzentriert zu bleiben, da ich genauer hinhören wollte, was meine Freunde so auf ihren Instrumenten spielten. Solche Momente mag ich besonders! Ich wüsste gern, was ihr darüber denkt.

English: I have recently published my song „Waiting for a better time“ in this blog. I have also an older live recording from the same song but with support from my friends, the Backporch Stringband. It was recorded during a jam session in one of my friends house. It is amazing how different this song sounds. My friends are telling me that this is their favourite. So tell me what you think about it.

Deutsch: Neulich habe ich meinen Song „Waiting for a better time“ in diesem Blog veröffentlicht. I habe noch eine Live-Aufnahme desselben Songs mit der Unterstützung meiner Freunde von der Backporch Stringband. Es ist sehr interessant und überraschend wie unterschiedlich die Versionen sich anhören. Für meine Freunde ist dieser Song ihr Favorit – nicht nur diese Version, sondern auch die in der ich mich nur mit Gitarre begleite. Sag mir, was du darüber denkst!

Der Fremde – Bonus Song – Live performance – KGB Cologne Germany

English: I was asked to play a bonus song at the end of the “Kunst gegen Bares” show after all the artists and musicians had finished their performances respectively (Arttheater, 21st April 2014). I chose the song “Der Fremde” I partially wrote in German, French and English language. It’s about feeling lonely or being alone. The German title “Der Fremde” means “l’étranger” in French and “foreigner” or “stranger” in English.

Deutsch: Am Ende der Show “Kunst gegen Bares“ in Köln, nachdem alle Künstler ihre jeweiligen Performances beendet hatten, wurde ich gefragt, ob ich nicht noch eine Zugabe geben könnte. Das hat mich sehr gefreut und ich konnte natürlich nicht “nein” sagen (Köln, Artheater, 21st April 2014).

Ich habe meine Song “Der Fremde” ausgesucht, der Strophen in Deutsch, Französisch und Englisch enthält. Er handelt von der Einsamkeit bzw. davon, dass man sich einsam fühlt. Der Deutsche Titel “Der Fremde” bedeutet “L’étranger” auf Französisch und “Foreigner” auf Englisch.

English: Why can’t we live in peace? My song is about fear. We all have it in our own hands to change something. “…I know, that you know, we are waiting – waiting for a better time!”

Deutsch: Warum können wir nicht in Frieden leben? In meinem Song geht es um genau diese Frage und um die Angst. Wir haben es in unseren Händen etwas zu ändern. “.. Ich weiss, dass du weisst, dass wir darauf warten – wir warten auf bessere Zeiten!”

My Time Will Come – Live performance – KGB Cologne Germany

English: Although it sounds sad, my song „My time will come“ is about hope. You should never give up to live your dreams and to do what you’ve always wanted. On your way you might make compromises, but you shouldn’t loose your focus.

This was my first song I sang during the show “Kunst gegen Bares” in Cologne, Germany (ARTheater, 21st April 2014) . You can see it in the Youtube-video.

Deutsch: Obwohl mein Song “My time will come” (“Meine Zeit wird kommen”) traurig klingt, handelt er doch eher von Hoffnung. Man sollte niemals aufgeben seinen Traum zu verwirklichen und das zu tun, was man immer schon tun wollte. Dabei Man macht vermutlich Kompromisse auf seinem Weg, aber man sollte niemals sein Ziel aus den Augen verlieren.

Kunst gegen Bares – Cologne – Germany

English: Unfortunately after several relocations I had to leave the Bluegrass Band I used to play with over the last years. From time to time  – at least once a year – I am playing with my friends, but it is different compared to be part of regular jam sessions or practices with them.

So – I decided to do my own music and try to connect to other musicians or artists. Let’s see what I’ll find!

Friends took me to an open stage in Cologne last year and asked me if that could be a good opportunity for me. I needed approx. a year to say “Why not” – so you’ll find here the result of my first performances in Cologne on the 10th of February 2014 (Kunst gegen Bares – ARTheater, Köln, http://tapferimnirgendwo.com/kunst-gegen-bares-koln-liste-der-auftretenden/ ).

My next performance at “Kunst gegen Bares” is planned for 21.04.2014 (Entry: 19:00, Begin: 20:00).

Deutsch: Leider musste ich nach mehreren Umzügen die Bluegrass Band verlassen, mit der ich in den letzten Jahren immer gespielt habe.

Immer mal wieder – jedoch mindestens einmal im Jahr – spiele ich zusammen mit meinen Freunden, aber dies ist natürlich anders, verglichen mit regelmäßigen Jam Sessions oder Proben.

So habe ich mich entschieden meine eigene Musik zu machen und mit anderen Musikern oder Künstlern Kontakt aufzunehmen. Mal sehen was so passieren wird!

Freunde hatten mich im letzten Jahr zu einer offenen Bühne in Köln mitgenommen und mich gefragt, ob das nicht auch eine gute Auftrittsmöglichkeit für mich sein könnte. Ich brauchte ungefähr ein Jahr bis ich „Warum nicht“ gesagt habe, daher findet ihr in diesem Blog das Ergebnis meines ersten Auftritts in Köln am 10. Februar 2014 (Kunst gegen Bares – ARTheater, Köln, http://tapferimnirgendwo.com/kunst-gegen-bares-koln-liste-der-auftretenden/ ).

Mein nächster Auftritt bei Kunst gegen Bares ist am 21.04.2014 geplant (Eintritt ab 19:00, Start: 20:00).

Great to create music and play it with friends

English: I am making music since I was a very young boy.  I began writing my own songs for myself after I finished school, but I’d never had money (!) to buy a good guitar or a quality recorder. At that time my cassette player was my best friend – I had fun, but the quality of the sound was poor.

Now I am sharing my songs with my friends via Dropbox. Unfortunately they are living about 400 km from my town, so we use Dropbox to exchange ideas.

But I like most when we all meet and make music the whole weekend.  So the sound I have posted in SoundCloud is the result of such a jam session (see picture – I took it, so you can’t see me :-)). Now I am able to record my songs even with a band using a hard disk recorder. So – the sound isn’t that bad compared to the past! Just check it out and send me feedback.

Deutsch: Ich mache schon seit meiner Kindheit Musik und habe damit angefangen meine eigenen Lieder zu schreiben, nachdem ich die Schule beendet hatte. Leider hatte ich damals nie genug Geld für eine gute Gitarre oder ein hochwertiges Aufnahmegerät. Zu dieser zeit war mein alter Kassettenrekorder mein bester Freund – ich hatte Spaß, aber die Aufnahmequalität war nicht so toll.

Nun stelle ich meine Songs meinen Freunden über “Soundcloud” zu Verfügung. Leider leben die meisten 400km von meinem Wohnort entfernt, so dass wir “Dropbox” zum Austausch von Musikideen benutzen. Am meisten mag ich es, wenn wir uns treffen und über das ganze Wochenende Musik machen. Der Sound, den ich in Soundcloud gepostet habe, ist das Ergebnis einer solchen Jam Session (siehe Foto – ich habe es gemacht, daher kann man mich nicht sehen!). Jetzt bin ich in der Lage meine Songs sogar mit der Band aufzunehmen und der Sound ist nicht mehr so schlecht, wie in der Vergangenheit. Hört euch das an und schickt mir euer Feedback.
